Organizations Large and Small Fear Cyber Crime Uptick - December 15, 2010
San Jose, CA – December 15, 2010 - Skybox Security today announced the results of a survey it recently conducted with a number of IT and security managers in six countries. Respondents covered the gamut of organizations, from dozens to hundreds of thousands of employees. Their organizations range from the simple to the complex; some have more than 500 firewalls. Common among them, however, is the expectation that cyber criminals will step up their activities during the holidays – and that there are concrete steps to avoid becoming a victim.
More than 84% of respondents said they expect cybercriminals to try to take advantage of the holidays and step up their activities. Many believe that intruders will try to exploit vulnerabilities while staff levels are reduced. In fact, more than half of the respondents indicated they will keep staffing at normal levels during the holidays. Nevertheless, almost 80% of the respondents felt that their own organization would not be vulnerable to cyber criminals during the upcoming holidays. This is due to the use of automated tools and a culture of increased vigilance.
Virtually all respondents rely heavily on automated tools to help them secure their environments. Some 68% are using firewall auditing and analysis tools to correlate layers of network data and pinpoint the issues that need action. Network configuration management products are used at 71% of the respondents’ companies, gathering and analyzing network device configuration data and creating a detailed network model and topology map that provides visibility of the entire network. Risk assessment tools are in place in 58% of the respondents’ sites to identify, predict and prevent cyber security attacks. Automated threat management tools also play an important role for 53% of the respondents, automatically prioritizing vital threats to the organization.
Survey participants shared security best practices that they felt would help keep the enterprise safe through the holiday season and on into the future. Advice centered around some key activities that can help an organization of any size:
“We see a growing awareness of the threat of cyber crime among IT and security personnel, who are implementing innovative tools to avoid attacks,” noted Gidi Cohen, CEO of Skybox Security. “This year’s survey offers important observations that can help any organization stay safe and secure during the holidays, and throughout the year.”
