From Silos to Synergy: Transforming Network and Security Operations

Effective communication between network and security teams reduces risk. See why organizations want to break down exposure management silos to improve security.

“Communication is the key to a healthy relationship.” This often-spoken statement not only applies to your personal life but also plays a significant role in business. This is especially true when it comes to organizational security.

Network and security teams play a vital role in keeping the business safe. Effective communication and collaboration between these teams are essential. When done properly, this collaboration helps streamline workloads and reduce the risk of a devastating — and costly — breach.

A recent research report, “Breaking Down Exposure Management Silos: Confronting the Network-Security Disconnect,” reveals that organizational leaders seem to believe they have good communication processes in place, make a concerted effort to share information, and keep a centralized inventory of all accessible assets available to the network and security teams.

Therefore, it is logical that organizations should be confident in their security postures.

However, the data shows otherwise.

A false sense of security

Despite having best practices in place, most of these leaders are concerned about the risk of a security incident due to a lack of communication between teams. 55% of respondents reveal they are concerned or very concerned about the risk of a security incident due to a lack of collaboration between network and security teams. In addition, nearly half of the 500 respondents to our survey said they had experienced miscommunications that resulted in delays in reporting or addressing security incidents in the past 12 months.

So why is there such a disconnect?

Clearly, network and security leaders want to work together. They realize that through joint processes and shared resources, they can better protect the organization and do more with less. Yet despite their efforts, often, these teams are still working in different technologies, with different data, different reporting structures and priorities, and different budgets causing them to operate in silos. For many organizations, this leaves too much room for error – and they know that these errors could be costly.

Consequently, it is no surprise that the majority of those surveyed are considering an integrated vulnerability/network security management solution. Enabling these siloed teams to work in a unified platform simplifies workflows, enables better information sharing, and provides more accurate risk calculations. Most importantly, a unified platform helps reduce risk and workloads for overwhelmed network and security teams.
